Vom Maat Slater werden die Gefangenen brutal behandelt, bis der Ringer einen Aufstand wagt und Kunta dabei den Menschenschinder tötet. Doch der Aufstand mißlingt, und im September 1767 trifft das Schiff in Maryland ein. Ein Drittel der Sklaven ist inzwischen tot. Auf Anraten des amerikanischen Sklaven Fiddler wird Kunta von John Reynold ersteigert und soll künftig auf den Namen Toby hören. Aber Kunta will sich nicht anpassen und versucht vergeblich zu fliehen. Nach einem erneuten Fluchtversuch neun Jahre später hacken Reynolds Sklavenjäger Kunta zur Strafe den rechten Fuß ab. Er überlebt nur dank der Pflege von Bell, die er später heiratet.
